This past weekend, over 350 teams of filmmakers from around the world were challenged to create an original short film in just 24 hours based on a theme, prop, and action assignment.  This year's theme:  Identity Theft.  Assigned props ranged from noodles to shaving cream and the assigned actions ranged from stretching to looking through a peephole.  Come check out the premiere of the Calgary films and vote for your favorites!  See the screening information below for more details.

Beth Prouty is an autodidactic producer who cut her teeth on the well-received short documentary, "The Sundowner" in 2009. After touring the festival circuit in 2010, Ms. Prouty began work as a programmer and festival coordinator for the 2011 Slamdance Film Festival. In addition to producing the 24 Film Racing event in San Francisco, she is currently in post-production for Neighbors, an Agency Charlie documentary, and collaborating with Jason Roberts on a short film due for production later this year.

 

Ticket Information 

Tickets will be available at the door for $10 and will sold on a first come, first serve basis. 

The screening is open to the public and anyone may attend.

San Francisco Judges

The judges for San Francisco include:

 

Carlton Evans is the co-founder and director of The Disposable Film Festival, currently in it’s 4th season, which celebrates achievements in new media filmmaking internationally. He is also an independent film producer and screenwriter whose productions have screened at top festivals worldwide, including Sundance, Tribeca, and Rotterdam. Carlton produced and co-wrote the documenraty feature CONNECTED, the short YELP, and was a creative consultant on the narrative feature THE WOODS, all of which premiered at Sundance 2011. He was the associate producer and director of distribution of THE TRIBE (Sundance 2006), which was singled out by The New York Times, Variety, and the Sundance Institute for its groundbreaking distribution strategy. Carlton has taught film theory, art history, and architecture at Stanford, San Francisco State University, and SF Art Institute, and lectures worldwide about film and new media. Carlton holds a PhD in Art History and Film Theory from Stanford University.

 

Daniel Michael Gahr is an Emmy-nominated filmmaker and photographer currently living and working in San Francisco. His unique and visually-arresting style has earned him a Princess Grace Award nomination for emerging film artists, and his films have been shown at numerous festivals, including Ann Arbor, New York Underground, SF Cinematheque, and Vancouver International. His work has also been featured in exhibitions at The Vancouver Film Center, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Lisbon, Portugal and in various shows in South Korea, Japan, China and Brazil. In 2008, Daniel received an Emmy nomination for his work as a producer on the TV Free Burning Man series for the international cable channel, Current TV. He recently directed a critically lauded music video, and an independent short comedy presently in post-production. He’s also currently in production on a feature documentary and in development/production on several other projects, all varying widely in degrees of fiction, length and hilarity.

 

Cinema Speakeasy: San Francisco celebrates independent film with good friends, attractive strangers, and a cold beer.  Originally founded in Los Angeles in 2009, the San Francisco chapter was created in 2010 by three career media production professionals, Fhay Arceo, Allison Davis and Kate Green.  It is our mission to create a social event of movie watching, hand-selecting the best in films that may have recently flown under the radar, often with an interactive element, and always with a discerning, diverse audience in mind.

 

Dalan McNabola, born, raised and educated in San Francisco, is a filmmaker and editor. He just finished editing with Tiffany Shlain, her newest feature film, “Connected: An Autoblogography about Life, Death & Technology” (connectedthefilm.com), which was been selected for Sundance's 2011 U.S. Documentary Competition. Dalan worked as a Producer/Editor at Al Gore's Emmy Award winning Current TV, where he created daily content doing short animations, motion graphics and video editing. Prior to that, Dalan was the associate editor on The Tribe (2006) which has been shown at over a 100 festivals including, Sundance, Tribeca, and Rotterdam.

 

Heather P. Morrison, Casting Director & Writer-Director.  A native of the Bay Area, Heather Morrison has provided casting direction for six short films. She has also directed two films and is writing her second short screenplay.  Heather brings over 20 years of acting experience to her casting process and is known for her empathy, warmth, and fun.  Heather has garnered awards for her work at Scary Cow, most recently, One of Two, winning the 48 Hour Film Project category in October.  Her credits include: The Crosses (Best Acting), Charity, Rock Star (Best Acting), U5, and Redumption (coming soon!).  You can catch these films on www.scarycow.com

Prizes:  In addition to competing for the prizes in the overall competition, San Francisco filmmakers will be competing for the additional prizes below:

▪ 4 minutes of original music by Gunnard Doboze (valued at $1,600) for a short film created by the winner of the San Francisco Film Race 2011.
