Special thanks to the judges below who will be dedicating their time to watch the hundreds of films that are produced for the 2012 competition!

 

  

Atlanta

Don McEnery - Comedian, writer, actor and musician Don McEnery is no stranger to stage or screen. He performed as an opening act for Howie Mandel from 1998-2001, is a regular at Las Vegas' Harrah's Improv, and has appeared at comedy clubs across the nation, including Catch-A-Rising-Star, Dangerfield's, Zanies and The Laff Factory. He has also opened for Tower of Power, Don McLean and Jorma Kaukonen. The New York native's TV credits include Star Search, MTV's Half-hour Comedy Hour, Evening at the Improv, Nashville Now, and HV 1's Stand-up Spotlight, hosted by Rosie O'Donnell. You can also see him in the Bob Odenkirk (of HBO's Mr. Show) directed feature film Melvin Goes to Dinner. An accomplished comedy writer, Don's credits range from TV to the big screen. His Seinfeld episode was Emmy-nominated; he's written for The George Carlin Show, The Arsenio Hall Show, and for Gene Wilder. His screenwriting credits include Pixar's a bug's life, nominated for an Annie Award, Disney's Hercules, and Sony Picture's Stuart Little: Call of the Wild. Don received his music education, acting and voice training in NYC. He plays the piano, mandolin and harmonica, as well as sings and juggles, although not at the same time. He lives with his lovely wife in the Hollywood Hills.

 

Jeff Otto is a writer whose work has appeared in such publications as Fandango, SyFy Channel, The New York Post, Indiewire, FEARnet, IGN.com and others.  He is a regular contributor on Rotten Tomatoes with over 300 featured reviews. As an entertainment journalist, Jeff has interviewed just about every actor, director and writer you can name over the past decade. He’s traveled the globe visiting sets such as Batman Begins in London, Chronicles of Narnia in New Zealand and, most recently, Big Miracle in Alaska and TV’s The Walking Dead in Atlanta. 

 

Matthew Valentinas is a Boston based entertainment lawyer and literary manager. Prior to launching his own practice www.MatthewValentinasLaw.com, Matthew worked in acquisitions and business affairs for independent distributors in both New York and LA before working for a major studio. Earlier in his career Matthew assisted agents and producers tracking and developing projects while also covering scripts professionally. He is a graduate of the film program at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and Suffolk University Law School. You can follow him @MattValentinas.

 

Blake West - Phoenix, Arizona born filmmaker Blake West was raised on the largest Indian reservation in the United States, Navajo Nation, immersed within the customs and traditions of Native American culture. Blake's father, a Smithsonian recognized silversmith and painter, and his mother, a veteran 30 year photographer, nurtured Blake's creativity, providing a stimulating and supportive atmosphere in which Blake's talents could develop and flourish. When Blake returned to his birthplace, the divergence between Phoenix and the reservation, each possessing their own unique diversity, became a metaphor for Blake's editing career which expanded to include both directing and producing. In 2003, Blake co-founded Ivisualeyes Films. His short films were screened at various film festivals, including Silver Lake Film Festival, Los Angeles International Short Film Festival, and Dances With Films Festival. Blake formed his production company, BLAKE WEST FILMS, in 2009. With his new team in 2011, West started B Well Productions. Blake has worked with a wide array of world renowned talents including Dennis Hopper, Quentin Tarantino, Russell Brand and Noel Gallagher, and he has established himself as an editor, director and producer who, regardless of genre, captivates his audiences with his singular expertise.

 

 

Calgary

Nancy R. Tillberg - Nancy’s career in the broadcast industry got its start at Confederation College, in Thunder Bay, Ontario.  With over 10 years under her belt in Thunder Bay, she moved on to Calgary in 1985.  In the mid-90s, Nancy struck out on her own as a freelancer, and Production Managed some very popular international series, “The Thirsty Traveler”,  “Eat, Shrink & Be Merry”, “X-Weighted: Families”, and “Puppy SOS”.  Since November 2011, Nancy accepted a position happily managing video productions at Freshwater Creative - and loving every minute of it!

 

Joe-Norman Shaw - Joe is Co-Director/Founder of Company of Rogues Actors Studio. Since 1981, he has worked as an actor in both theatre and film across Canada and internationally. Some of his film/TV credits include: Supernatural, Crazy Canucks, Burn, Tom Stone, North of Sixty: Lonesome Dove, MacGyver, The Commish, and Call Me: The Rise and Fall of Heidi Fleiss. Joe is also Artistic Director of Rogues Theatre and an acting instructor at Mount Royal University.

 

Jonathan Joffe - Jonathan has been involved in film and television since 1995. His work has earned over 20 awards and screened at over 50 festivals worldwide. His credits include multiple award winning short films, a 3 part television documentary, numerous screenplays, and now the completion of his first feature The Burlesque Assassins, produced in conjunction with Telefilm Canada and Superchannel.  When not working in film, Jonathan is an acid swing dancer, a black belt in Wado Kai Karate, skier, and scuba.

Los Angeles

Jordan Brady began as a stand-up comedian, touring nightclubs and colleges in 49 states across America, before snagging work with MTV, NBC, and later, Comedy Central. In 1997, he wrote and directed the feature mockumentary, "Dill Scallion," which Roger Ebert anointed as "the 'Spinal Tap' of country music.”  Brady followed up with the independent film "The Third Wheel," starring Ben Affleck and Luke Wilson, and the Miramax flop "Waking Up In Reno," with Billy Bob Thornton and an undiscovered Charlize Theron.  Mr. Brady’s first documentary is "I AM COMIC," which stars over 75 professional comics, including Sarah Silverman, Louis C.K., and Jeff Foxworthy, and premiered in Park City in 2010.  Jordan has also directed over 719 national TV spots to date. James C. Burns - The 2012 announcement of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 has recast the spotlight onto James C. Burns, who will once again star in the demanding lead role of “Sgt. Frank Woods,” a role for which Burns has received Spike TV’s 2010 Video Game Award for “Best Character of The Year” and placed him alongside award-winning industry veterans Ed Harris, Sam Worthington and Gary Oldman. Since 2005, Burns has appeared in over 100 feature films, TV shows and commercials, including Michael Bay's Transformers, Werner Herzog's My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done and numerous festival winners. He is recognizable to many TV fans for his starring roles on shows like Criminal Minds, The Forgotten, Burn Notice, Cold Case, Make It or Break It and as the mysterious "Vaughan” on the iconic daytime series General Hospital.  In addition to the release of Black Ops II, this year Burns stars in the highly anticipated zombie apocalypse thriller Dead Season, and the sci-fi action thriller BlackJacks. Kate Sullivan Green spends most of her time watching documentaries and putting them on public television. She's also a co-director for Cinema Speakeasy, a screening series founded by Saskia Wilson-Brown and Georgi Goldman that makes a social event out of movie-watching, showcasing shorts, features, indies, docs, and anything else we think rocks (all with a cold beer). A judge for San Francisco's film race last year, she's looking forward to seeing what cinematic gems Los Angeles has in store for 2012.

 

Daniel Martinico is an artist and filmmaker based in Los Angeles. His videos have shown in galleries, film festivals and museums internationally, including Machine Project, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, MOCA's Geffen Contemporary, LA Filmforum at the American Cinematheque, and Il Cinema Ritrovato at the Cineteca di Bologna. Martinico's first feature film OK, Good premiered at the 2012 Slamdance Film Festival. He is a graduate of Bard College and holds an MFA in Visual Arts from U.C. San Diego, where he currently serves as visiting faculty in the Communication Department.

 

 

Taylor O. Miller grew up in Lexington, Kentucky & has loved film ever since she & her brother made movies as kids. Her first short film, Debris, premiered in 2005 in New York City and Los Angeles. Taylor's experience ranges from traveling & photographing for the United Nations to assisting independent film producers. Taylor is currently working on her PhD in Media from the European Graduate School, specializing in photography and film. She is currently co-directing a music video with Nick Gaglia, and directing and producing a documentary on Ruth Petzold. There is nothing Taylor loves more than finding a great short film, and after three years of programming at Slamdance, she is excited to join the 24 Hour Film Race.

 

 

 

Miami

PAUL TEI is the artistic director and founder of Mad Cat Theatre Company in Miami, Florida. They have been part of the South Beach Comedy Festival in 2010 & 2011 producing Shepherd’s Pie by Paul Tei and Ivonne Azurdia and The Preservation Society by Paul Tei. Paul has directed over 75 plays in South Florida, Chicago, the LA area, New York, Las Vegas and San Francisco. A member of SAG & AFTRA Paul has appeared in numerous TV shows including "CSI", "CSI Miami", "Franklin & Bash", "The Protector", "Going To California", and recurring roles on "Zeke & Luther" as Eddie Coletti and "Burn Notice" as Barry the money launderer. Paul holds an MFA in directing from The Goodman School of Drama at De Paul University and a BA in Theatre from Barry University.

 

TODD ALLEN DURKIN appears on Starz Network as Asst. District Attorney Doug Feehan in “Magic City”. Has also been seen on “Burn Notice”, “The Glades”, “Ghost Stories”, “America's Most Wanted” and “Golfballs!”,  Recently seen at Gablestage in A Steady Rain. Some favorite credits include: Bug, Blasted, The Lieutenant of Inishmore and Reasons To Be Pretty. Other credits include Captiva, Six Years, Death of a Salesman, The Seafarer, Moon For The Misbegotten (James Tyrone), The Zoo Story (Jerry), That Championship Season, Harold Pinter's Betrayal, Dealer's Choice, Much Ado About Nothing, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Tempest, Love's Labour's Lost, BUMP, Beggar on Horseback, Salt-Water Moon, The Irish Curse, Agamemnon, As You Like It (Touchstone), and the title roles in Hamlet, The Virtual Adventures of Riff-Cat Polito and as Lenny Bruce in Lenny. KIM OSTRENKO was born in Miami and grew up on a small sailboat on the Miami River, with no running water or electricity.  As there was no TV, her imagination was fueled by time spent by the campfire listening to stories & live music supplied by family & friends. High school marked the beginning of her interest in acting. She started off in community theatre, then received her BFA in Theatre from F.I.U. She has been acting professionally ever since. After working steadily in theatre, Kim began working in TV/Film. Some of her credits include: Dolphin Tale (with Ashley Judd, Morgan Freeman & Harry Connick Jr.), Sex Drive,(with James Marsden), Boynton Beach Club (with Len Cariou), “ Magic City”,  “Burn Notice” & “From The Earth to the Moon”. She has also appeared in numerous national & regional commercials. Kim has been honored with several Carbonell Awards for her work onstage. Some of her recent credits include: Becky's New Car, God of Carnage, You Can't Take it With You, Sylvia, WELL, A Midsummer Night's Dream, & Lend Me a Tenor.

 

MILTON DAVID HERDOIZA was born and raised in Miami, FL. After graduating in 2003 from The University of Miami with a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre/Film Scriptwriting, he moved to Los Angeles in 2003 in search for a career in Film / Television. After 5 successful years of working as a Background Researcher in pre-casting for multiple hit TV reality shows which include: “The Real World”, “Shot at Love with Tila Tequila”, “Rock of Love”, “The Real Wedding Crashers”, “America’s Next Best Dance Crew”, “Parental Control”, “Made”, “Date My Mom”, “Paris Hilton BFF” and many others, Milton now works as the primary Extras casting director for ABC's hit TV show "Private Practice". Other television/film casting credits include ABC's "Revenge", MTV's "Hard Times of RJ Berger", and the Feature Films "Bad Ass", "Tick Tock" and the upcoming film "Rock of Ages".

 

WILL VAZQUEZ is an award-winning filmmaker who began his career as a fashion and beauty photographer. By age 22, his work had appeared in Vogue, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar and he had become one of the youngest photographers to shoot for Playboy Magazine. In 1998 he turned his focus to filmmaking, and in 2000 served as producer and director of photography on the feature film El Florida. In 2005 he made his feature film directorial debut with the comedy, Quick Pick. Will is currently in post production of his latest feature, OverExposure, a Suspense/Thriller about a young fashion photographer in the Magic City.

 

RENE RODRIGUEZ has been The Miami Herald's movie critic since 1995. He studied film criticism and film-making at the University of Miami. Before being named movie critic, he was an arts writer for The Herald and a general assignment reporter on the city desk. He has also written about film for The New York Times Sunday Magazine, Variety, Vogue, The New York Post, Entertainment Weekly and Hispanic magazine. Montreal

Marie Lynda Bilodeau is a filmmaker, actress, model, researcher, programmer and and film consultant. Here are a few of her titles : Ten Times Maria, The Castle Keeper, Garde-Robe (installation). // Marie Lynda Bilodeau est cinéaste, actrice, modèle, recherchiste, programmatrice et consultante en cinéma. Quelques-unes de ses réalisations : Dix Fois Maria, Les Châtelains, Garde-Robe(Installation).

 

Dave Douglas Professor at the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema, Concordia University; member of CFMDC (Canadian Filmmakers Distribution Centre).  Dave has made 5 experimental films, two of which are in distribution @ CFMDC (Vancouver Art Show, Lady in a Chair)  He`s also taught experimental film at Escuela Internacional de Cine y Television at San Antonio de los Banos in Cuba.  Interests are in Film History, Cuban cinema, avant-garde cinema, Canadian cinema.

 

David Uloth:  David’s eleven short films have screened at hundreds of film festivals (eg. The Berlinale, TIFF, Rotterdam, Karlovy Vary, Taipei Golden Horse, etc.). They have also been sold to television markets around the world (eg. NBC, MTV, Canal +, FOX, Bravo!, the Comedy Network, and the CBC/ Radio-Canada) and have garnered many prizes.  He recently co-wrote the feature 2 Frogs in the West and is working on two more shorts as well as two feature films with financing from La SODEC, Telefilm Canada, and Le Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec. His newest short, Fly, is set to hit the film festival circuit in 2012.  David Uloth holds degrees in Biology from McGill University and Film Production from Concordia University. He lives in Montréal with his DVD collection, his wife and collaborator, Chloé Cinq-Mars, and their son.

 

Karina MarianoActive in the Montreal independent film community since 1997, Karina Mariano has produced and directed various experimental shorts, mainly shot on Super 8. Among numerous jobs around the city, she has mainly worked as a film programmer, dog walker and is a retired Roller Derby girl. For the love of hand-made cinema, she is one of the main programmers and co-founder of the Montreal Underground Film Festival (MUFF) which will celebrate its 7th year in May 2012
